ITRI Innovation operates a Malvern Instruments Mastersizer 2000 and Zetasizer 3000 with APD which allows measurement of particles from 2000 microns to 0.002 microns.

Possible uses include:-
When bulk powders are transported. If the particle variation is too great there will be separation and the removal of the powder at the final destination may not be straightforward. It is therefore important to know the spectrum of particle sizes.
The pigments and fillers in paints and coatings that constitute the colour of a paint must maintain a consistent size and shape in order for the paint to appear the same. A pigment with 5um particles will look paler than one with 10um particles.
Aerosol drug dispensers need consistent drug particle sizes in order for the aerosol carrier to dispense effectively. It is therefore important to be able to categorise the drug particles.
The modern jet engine requires a very even fuel-to-air ratio in order to maintain smooth running of its turbines. The fuel and air are mixed by the injection system immediately prior to injection. It is therefore important to know how a fuel behaves under pressure when it is mixed with air. Do the particles of fuel maintain a regular size and shape or do they vary enough to cause turbulence inside the injectors?
All rivers and water flows carry sediment particles. The size of these particles dictates whether there will be erosion or sedimentation and deposition or whether the particles are so small that they will be carried out to sea and remain in suspension.
If the particle sizes are all the same in an abrasive slurry it is relatively easy to calculate how long and under what pressure the polishing procedure should take. This is particularly useful for the Electronic Semiconductor industry which needs to back grind and top grind silicon surfaces ready for impurity doping.
Other, mechanical, industries that use lapping and grinding slurries also need to know the particle sizes.
